I did enjoy a good debate even back then though, ADBG. Think I started to like him when he argued with me over the space program (and won, big time). We talked about politics a lot. I think it depends on the person. Ultimately though that lasted about six weeks, after which we knew everything about what the other thought and there really was no reason to feel for competing ideologies. Plus all my ideas had shifted…was it due to attraction or just the fact that he was so fucking brilliant? Maybe both.

#721,
You are just summarizing BV’s post, in much less elegant prose. But like BV, you are leaving out a big piece of the picture.
Here’s a better gambling analogy. You owe a large sum of money to the mob, and have every reason to believe you soon find yourself with a hole in your head in a shallow grave in the desert if you don’t pay them back real soon. You take your last $100 and head to the casino, hoping to hit the jackpot. You know the rules favor the house. You know you could be wiped out. But it’s your last chance – you have nothing left to lose. If you win, you’ll live. Lose, and tomorrow you’ll be dead.
In that analogy, getting executed by the mob represents the worst case outcome – the extinction event. But from the genetic perspective, dying isn’t the worst case outcome, it’s a certainty. The worst case outcome is dying without reproducing.
