I see your point, Jeremy. However, the blind confidence of schoolyard boys, if we project it to adulthood, may work in a bar full of impressionable girls. (This is the essence of Brooklyn sprezzatura.) Totally agree with you.

But I don’t think it will work over time; being a schoolyard boy is of little utility when the blindly confident man without a map misses the turn for Brooklyn Heights and finds himself — and her — in Bed-Stuy surrounded by people who would prefer to have his Porsche, and his Manolo-sporting chickadee, for themselves.

So where I diverge: Studied indifference to fate is just ignorance, in a grown-up, in my view. Its appeal to women, which I believe (as you do), exists, says more about the women than the men.

They may assert a love of the dashing, romantic, carefree man. But they only hang around if he’s good at something, and provides the utility of provisioning, protection, security. They’re not too keen on being dragged from the car and assaulted in a slum because Mr. Carefree forgot his fucking map. It being real life, not a PUA seminar, these moments are inevitable.

This relates, I believe, to 10×10’s/#67’s comments about the killer combination of alpha (carefree) and beta (resources, stability) attributes. As always, Jenny Holzer: “Protect Me from What I Want.”) It relates to my farmer buddy in #172: she fell in love with his mystery and confidence, in the end he had to be willing to wife her up to keep her.

Sidenote: surgeons in aircraft: there’s a reason Bonanzas are called “doctor and dentist killers.” Some people think that total authority in one sphere translates without effort into others. Then they fuck up and die.
