While we may, on average, offer greater physical and intellectual skills, we are not dealing with a fair trader who acknowledges this — or even sees the point of fair-dealing; in love, as in other games, the object is to win. Women know well that they hold the cards, that they can drop the full weight of the law on our heads at any time. Their skillful withholding of the free options to retire at 30, drop the law on our heads, or merely (hypergamously) trade out of a completed deal for a better deal — these all undermine the thesis that men and women may approach each others as equals and reach a rewarding detente. They also explain why women are so lazy in the love game. As we up our awareness, women do fall in love with us: Sure, it happens. Sure, it’s good when it does. Trusting that their “love” is enduring is to believe that a woman’s love is not situational, that her “love” is not contingent on our permanent, incessant, and skillful leadership. We’re investing everything, if we want to make this work. Women then choose which barking seal is the most charming, which seal offers the highest net present value. As portfolio managers of romantic impulse however, they trade out of stocks on a whim. We cannot.

A common decision science error is to use probability-weighted techniques when in fact we are dealing with a default model problem. Example: when you wish to price an object, you’ll often attempt to achieve a probability-weighted insight into its value. So, more or less, you pay a generally correct price. This is great, unless you are dealing with a problem that will WIPE YOU OUT if you’re wrong.
