On Jeremy’s two types of confidence:
I think the key word here was dropped by BB. Sprezzatura, an ethic and art of living, presents an air of studied indifference to life’s vagaries. Celebrated by the cavalier poets and embodied by men such as Donne and Raleigh, these were soldiers, sailors, churchmen, poets and spies. They slept with the Queen and then married her fairest maid — risking a beheading. The world was their stage.
These days ‘players’ and ‘dudes’ affect a superficial version of sprezzatura. Examples: cool dudes in Brooklyn, sporting manly facial hair and Pendleton, carefully oiled Red Wings, as though they weren’t, really, copywriters in a cubicle farm but men living it up in the big city for a few days, fresh off their ranch on the short-grass prairie. They’re consumers of a particular style, they are not of the actual lifestyle they project. They ‘one-click-ordered’ their sprezzatura, they didn’t acquire it (and all of its underlying competence and discipline) through decades of apprenticeship and labor.
So, what is lost in the easy admiration of the man who sets out for his destination without a map or a care, are the thousands of hours of effort, preparation and disciplined apprenticeship that provided the foundation of his paradoxical, seemingly carefree, indifference to threat and contingency.
