I’ve become friendly with one of the elders, who tried to hug me on introduction (these guys are all huggers), who travels to Promise Keeper rallies, who in our third conversation told me all about his second marriage and how his wife was a major challenge he could not satisfy until God revealed a strategy. In short, virtually every attribute he’s revealed in regard to interacting with men and his wife, is an opposing argument, as far as I’m concerned, for living with a woman. His is the preferred male social model. Meanwhile, he must be brow-beaten or emotionally dominated by his wife, beyond belief, or else he wouldn’t tell me already how he had to pull off the road to cry real tears of frustration over her, and how his lifesaving moment was when he discovered, through prayer, how to serve her. He must be insecure within that marital relationship, or else he wouldn’t be hugging me instead of saying, “Hi.” I find the whole business pretty creepy, but at least I’ve gotten over my shyness and just tell these dudes, when they go for the soulful man-clinch, “Hey, no hugging.”
