Actually there are studies that link certain dark traits to sexual success, but the link isn’t causal. In other words, yes, men successful with women tend to have more of certain “dark traits”, but as a poster Paragon explained, it actually works in reverse.
Those men are actually genetically attractive, and can actually “afford” to display more of these darker traits. It is not that the dark traits themselves are attractive.
It is like women who say “bah, men like bitches, men are attracted to bitches, bah!”… But it actually works the other way. It actually so happens that women who are attractive can more often afford to be bitches and still get men.
Men aren’t attracted to the bitchiness, they’re attracted in spite of it. Same dynamic works with jerks.
And as Clarence suggested very well, some of those people whining about how women are into jerks tend to use the term to describe any man who’s not cowering down in fear of women. A lot of times the label is applied to good men who are simply unapologetic in their pursuit of women and sex.

Yep, it works in the reverse. That’s why I gave the example of criminals. I doubt that the studies you mentioned show that felons are perceived as the most attractive males ;) This proves it’s casual as you noted.
