But what about those who are unemployed or self-employed or dependent on some other source of income for support?

The self-employed should be opening IRA or Keough accounts and contributing as much as they can to them. The unemployed better get a job ASAP, and the dependent better hope the gravy train never ends.

As a single person living in a city like DC or Boston or NYC…what sort of budget to you create…and do you stick to it? Where do you spend most of your money? Where do you cut corners? How do you manage your finances?

My budget is after bills, I allow myself $1000/mo. for myself – that includes buying lunch, renting movies, going out to eat, etc. I have to wait until I get to the next month’s $1k if I want something that will make me go over budget. I usually don’t blow through the $1k each month though. Most of my money goes to bills: mortgage, property taxes, utilities, student loans, and car payments. I cut corners by cutting down on going out, I only shop when things are on sale, and I eat cheap lunches. I manage my finances online and review everything monthly.

Do you keep a savings account? What’s your strategy for accumulating savings?

Basically, any money left over each month goes to savings. I should have my student loans wiped out in the next year or 2, which will put me in a position to start saving some serious money in the future. Like Crotchie, I have 6 months of living expenses saved in cash currently. Anyone over 30 should have at least 3 months of expenses in reserve.
