“The Strange Man is often compelling.”
Visitors to my home country would listen to the local women denigrate the local men. The women didn’t realize, however, that the visitors were spending the rest of their time with us, the local men. The women would get to them first (there’s a shortage of men here), before they’d gravitate to us. Every visitor I spoke to would have a comment along these lines:
“You guys are not what we expected. Why are the women so down on you?” They would be genuinely curious about it.

Now that I’m widely travelled, I can say the above has been my experience just about everywhere I’ve been. The “local” women berate the local men behind their backs. It’s as if they are saying “please don’t think we are losers like them!”
Or “It doesn’t matter how good/bad you are, you’re not a local man so you have to be better than them!”
Or “you don’t need to ask if I’ve got a boyfriend. He’s just another local loser, he deserves everything he gets.”

I remember my great grandfather mentioning the same phenomenon, when he was talking about troops stationed overseas during wartime.
